Our approach

Diversity of thought:
We strongly feel that our diversity is critical to our success. We have consciously built a diverse team in terms of backgrounds, personalities, and ways of thinking. We have a strong culture of discussion and debate which helps bring different perspectives to the table when evaluating investment opportunities. This has helped create differentiated portfolios and avoid consensus calls.

Culture:
We place a big emphasis on culture within our own team, and pride ourselves on having a highly open and collaborative environment. We apply this same criteria when looking at companies. We spend significant time evaluating company management, and engage on areas such as employee engagement, strategy, and innovation, all of which we believe define the corporate culture of a firm.

Research focus:
A key differentiator for the team is the breadth and depth of independent research that we do. We have built a strong research platform that has four key characteristics. It is long term, global, focused on management, and integrates ESG and durability. We focus on long term, secular themes as part of our top-down research, and have a detailed, systematic approach from a bottom-up perspective.

Durability and ESG:
We believe companies that adopt a forward-thinking and proactive approach across a range of ESG factors (1) are likely to have more durable business practices and returns. We conduct our ESG research independently, with all team members responsible for ESG-related analysis. This structure allows us to assess materiality and engage with the companies in which we invest.

Investment philosophy

  • We believe management quality is key to a company’s long-term performance; we assess factors such as execution track record, vision, and integrity
  • Quality franchises with sustainable competitive advantages are able to maintain industry leadership and outperform over the long-term
  • Companies that invest for the long-term and prioritise ESG factors1 are likely to have more durable business practices and returns
